Pontem, a Web3 product development studio, has raised $6 million in an investment round co-led by Faction and Lightspeed Venture Partners. Participants in the round also include Pantera Capital, Aptos Foundation, Wintermute, Altonomy, Shima Capital, and Kraken Ventures, among others. Pontem plans to use the funds to create opportunities for developers to build applications that are compatible with both the Ethereum Virtual Machine and the Move programming language, thereby expanding the use of the Move programming language beyond the Aptos and Sui blockchains. `We plan to use these funds to increase the adoption of the Move programming language beyond the Aptos and Sui blockchains, providing development teams with a language that allows them to add new features that support security and scalability, which are necessary for mass adoption,` said Pontem co-founder Alejo Pint. `The vendor lock-in problem on the EVM is only temporary. We plan to address this issue in Ethereum, enabling Web2 developers to more easily and confidently enter this space.` `Pontem is building critical primitives for the Move ecosystem,` said Faction partner Banafshe Fathe. `Pantera is excited to invest in Pontem and help develop the Move and Aptos ecosystem. This latest funding round brings Pontem`s total raised capital to $10.5 million, following $4.5 million raised in June 2021 through a private token sale led by Mechanism Capital and Kenetic Capital, as well as Delphi Ventures and Animoca Brands. The Pontem technology was initially developed by the Aptos team. Aptos is a recent Layer 1 blockchain built on the Move programming language, developed at Meta with the participation of people from the Diem stablecoin project, which was previously led by Facebook. Increasing the use of the Move ecosystem Move is a programming language based on Rust designed to create secure and efficient smart contracts. Unlike the EVM, which uses the Solidity language, the Move VM aims to improve throughput through parallel processing. Pontem also claims that Move is more appealing to Web2 developers from traditional finance and technology sectors who want to do web development in Web3, as they are already familiar with similar statically typed languages. These funds are intended for the development of Move Virtual Machine products on EVM-compatible blockchains such as Ethereum, including the newly developed Lumio Layer 2 based on Move - an optimistic rollup on Ethereum that relies on alternative Layer 1s like Aptos for transaction processing. Pontem states that products already deployed on Aptos, including Pontem Wallet and Liquidswap DEX, have garnered 40,000 weekly active users and up to $1 million in daily volume. Pontem also plans to provide support for the Solana Virtual Machine and other blockchain languages in the future.
